Education Digital Upgrade- Double entry 1

Quote:
"A classroom suited to today’s students should deemphasize solitary piecework. It should facilitate the kind of collaboration that helps individuals compensate for their blindnesses, instead of cultivating them. That classroom needs new ways of measuring progress, tailored to digital times — rather than to the industrial age or to some artsy utopia where everyone gets an Awesome for effort." (Heffernen, August 7, 2011).

I chose this because I don't necessarily agree with the article and I feel this passage allows me to elaborate on why I do not. I do think that our classrooms should be more technologically integrated however I don't believe that a student's work should be internet dependent. I understand that many a classroom was designed around the idea of industrialization and polishing soon-to-be factory workers, yet it has already evolved from that. Needless to say, not every student will move on to college, the world needs garbage men and women, factory workers and utility workers alike. Furthermore, not every child, even in today's society, has internet access outside of the classroom. To be dependent on internet based assignments leaves some students at a disadvantage. With all that said, I agree that classrooms need a technological upgrade, but not to the extent in which the author is proposing.

  1. Good critical analysis of the major point the author makes in this article. It is true that not all students will choose to go on to college. However consider this. When teachers do not prepare students to be successful in college, are they making the choice for the student rather than the student making the choice for themselves?

I agree that not everything young people is good or productive and that teacher do need to have some limits on Internet use in the classroom!

Your resource related directly to the ideas presented in the article. You also need to make a citation for the resource you found.Let me know when you do and I'll add a point to your overall score. Right now it is a 4/5

Nice job on your first reflective blog posting!

  2. I agree to your post. Not everyone lives in a area right now that has good internet service. Believe it or not there are places where I am from that don't even have high speed internet. Some people are stuck on dial up internet. This could cause problems for students when teachers assigne homework that is on the internet. Not everyone is ready for this technology take over. At the moment there still are jobs in factorys and the mines. Schools still need to be preparing for jobs that we still have at the present time.

  3. I also agree with your post. I fear we will leave some children behind, especially those who do not have access to internet at home. We need to prepare the children of today for all types of jobs, not just the technology area!!

  4. I strongly agree. While technological upgrading is really good and essential, it can't be applied for all students. Given the diversity of students, it's difficult to integrate new technology into homework assignments.

How do you think technology should be used in a classroom?

  5. I strongly agree that being a factory worker is an excellent job. My husband works on military aircrafts in a factory. He makes a good living and is paying my way through school here at Fairmont State. I believe that this is a matter of choice. If we do not give future students the technological skills they need for then we are limiting their choices.

  6. I agree that technology should not be incorporated in all of the classroom, but I do believe that educators should try to prepare all of their students for a technological workforce. I understand that not everyone will go to college or work in a technological field, but as teachers we should prepare them to the best ofour ability. Classrooms are sometimes the only place that students are able to get technological skills, so it is important that we incorporate it as much as we can without making technology the basis for all curriculum.
